Summary

More
Devin and his sister, Violet, are visiting their uncle Jack, who lives in an old house by the seashore. Jack was a sailor, and he has collected strange and fascinating items from the sea. Exploring a back room, Devin and Violet discover a locked trunk—a pirate's chest. The trunk is wrapped in old, heavy chains and secured with a huge rusted lock. But they manage to get it open. What were they thinking?!

They lift the lid slowly—and see that it's filled with antique jack-in-the-boxes. One is hidden under the others, covered in dust. It plays an odd, unpleasant song. Up pops a very ugly, mean-looking puppet—an old pirate with a dirty red bandana over his long greasy hair, scars on his cheeks, and a beard…and he's got one eye missing. "Thanks for letting Sailor Jack out!" he rasps, bouncing on his spring. But that's just the beginning of their nightmare, because now they're his captives.

Now Devin and Violet face troubling questions: Will Jack return them to their uncle? Just how much is a pirate's promise worth?

About this Series

Since the release of Welcome to Dead House in July 1992, R. L. Stine's spooky series has become the gold standard for children's horror fiction. The stories follow child characters who find themselves in terrifying situations, usually involving monsters and other supernatural beings.

From 1992 to 1997, Stine published 62 books in the runaway bestselling series, adding series spinoffs like Goosebumps Series 2000, Give Yourself Goosebumps, Tales to Give You Goosebumps, Goosebumps Triple Header, Goosebumps HorrorLand, and Goosebumps Most Wanted. To date, Goosebumps has inspired a television series, as well as a feature film starring Jack Black as R. L. Stine.

What is the secret of Goosebumps' sensational success? Stine calls the books "scary…but also funny." He breaks the suspense with laughter at carefully chosen moments along the way. His heroes are ordinary kids in extraordinary situations, but nobody dies…even though there are some breathtaking moments of pure peril along the way.
